Further Afield
The “Further Afield” series is inspired by the natural world through the garden, and the grassland. These paintings are initiated with a checkerboard pattern suggesting plots of land. Irregular larger shapes below represent earth, while strips at the top represent sky. Color, at the heart of these atmospheres, evokes an arid atmosphere, a weathered surface, also, nostalgia through studied vintage tones. I use a “naive” style in building textures, colors, and shapes with paint; I employ spontaneous and primitive gestures along with slow and careful mark making over many layers. This building and subtracting of paint is an intuitive process, eventually bringing all parts together in harmony.
