Landscape
The rolling countryside of southern Pennsylvania is novel but also familiar –there is something about the horizon line and how the shapes formed by hills, roads, and farms fit together in the landscape that draws my eye. As the surface of the canvas is altered over many stages of dragging paint and tools across it, so is the earth, through centuries of erosion, perennial cycles, and human activity. I consider both activities when I’m making a painting, and the resulting blotches, spots, texture and depth of color hints at (speaks to) this ongoing progression.
