Yearound
The Yearound series depicts the annual cycle in twelve portraits of the months of the year through the Individual Artist Grant by the Indiana Arts commission. To begin, I drew arrangements of natural “artifacts” from my neighborhood parks and streets. These artifacts were anything from root balls, piles of yard waste, leaves, pods, shadows or curiosities that my children brought me. I was inspired to look at the textiles of William Morris Graves and also at ancient fertility figures to visually direct ideas on shape, symmetry and layering. The fertility figure was simplified into a circle and I used this shape as the foundation for each painting. I didn't set out intending to paint “wreaths” but found this idea very fitting as it is an ancient symbol associated with strength, lineage, and victory.
